GPS units
In the realm of outdoor adventures, modern technology has emerged as a pivotal companion, with battery longevity lasting for days, a true game-changer. While GPS remains a staple, we're not ones to solely rely on it; hence, a trusty map and compass always accompany us, just in case of unforeseen mishaps or battery depletion.
A point worth noting is the battery life's dependency on temperature and usage context—a factor we've learned through experience in various rugged terrains.
Now, let's steer clear of the smartphone app saga; while they have their utility, the limitations—such as pre-downloading routes due to remote area signal issues. I would like to mention FATMAPS, a personal favourite. With its utilization of OS maps and versatile mapping options tailored to different regions, it's been a reliable aid. Notably, its overlay features, like slope angles for winter trekking to evade avalanche-prone slopes, make it indispensable.
Now, onto the gadgets we use:
Garmin Fenix series: Our go-to wearable GPS, equipped with a plethora of functionalities tailored to our adventures. Here's a snippet:
GPS and TopoActive Maps: A robust navigation duo ensuring we stay on track. It also can be used as a smart watch connecting it to your phone.
Multi-Sport Features: A boon for our diverse activities, customizable screen views add to its allure.
Navigating our main pursuits:
Hiking: Beyond just grid references, it provides altitude data and lap distance/time, invaluable during adverse weather.
Mountain Biking: Its mapping prowess shines here, affixed to our handlebars for seamless route tracking, especially vital amidst natural trails' twists and turns.
Noteworthy is its live tracking ability via Bluetooth, a boon for solo escapades, ensuring a safety net by sharing our location with trusted contacts.
The battery life of this watch is outstanding in my point of view for what i use it for it would last an entire week of constant use its worth a note i have had this watch for 3 years.
InReach Mini 2: Our quintessential companion for grander ventures. While lacking map functionalities, its text messaging via satellite—albeit with subscription plans—is a lifeline when venturing abroad to regions with uncertain phone signal. The SOS button adds a layer of security, connecting us to Garmin's control room in dire emergencies—a feature we wouldn't embark on major expeditions without. Another cool feature it will text you weather updates if on a longer trip (their is a charge). We used this device on our Iceland Expedition and worked flawlessly.
In conclusion, these devices aren't just gadgets; they're lifelines, enhancing our adventures with safety, precision, and peace of mind i would say its definitely worth the investment if you are an avid adventure.
